The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has joined the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).
Building a responsible supply chain from mine to retail, the RJC includes more than 100 members, representing all sectors of the diamond and gold supply chain, trade associations and service providers. Council members must apply the RJC System by upholding the RJC Code of Practices and undergoing third‐party auditing to become certified. This unique system builds on recognized international initiatives like the Kimberley Process and ISO standards, such as SA8000 and ISO 14001.
“GIA has established the international benchmark for grading laboratories and there is a fundamental logic for our organizations to leverage the strength of our standards and global approaches. We can now offer GIA the opportunity to certify its business practices against the RJC System,” says Michael Rae, RJC’s Chief Executive Officer.
Established in 1931, GIA is a nonprofit institute with its worldwide headquarters in Carlsbad, California. GIA’s mission is to ensure the public trust in gems and jewellery by upholding the highest standards of integrity, academics, science and professionalism through education, research, laboratory services, and instrument development.
“We are proud to be a member of RJC and look forward to working together to cultivate future generations of ethical business leaders,” says Donna Baker, President and Chief Executive Officer of GIA.
