Gucci Joins Responsible Jewellery Council

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) says that Gucci, one of the world’s leading luxury brands, has joined the Council’s membership.

The RJC now has more than 140 members, representing all sectors of the diamond and gold supply chain, trade associations and service providers. Under the RJC System, all Commercial Members of the RJC will be required to be audited by accredited, third party auditors to verify their conformance with the RJC’s Code of Practices to become certified. This unique system builds on recognized international initiatives like the Kimberley Process and ISO standards, such as SA8000 and ISO 14001.

“I am delighted to welcome Gucci to the membership of RJC. Gucci’s membership of the RJC will reinforce the Council’s message of responsible business practices amongst large and small industry players,” says Michael Rae, the RJC’s Chief Executive Officer.

“We are extremely proud to join the Responsible Jewellery Council as we strongly believe in the role of this association. Gucci has taken a leadership position in the industry by strongly stating and demonstrating its commitment to corporate social responsibility. Our participation in RJC is a further step into an even more responsible path, which Gucci started in 2004 and has allowed us to align the whole supply chains of leather goods, jewellery and shoes to the CSR principles and SA8000 certification system,” says Patrizio di Marco, Gucci President and CEO.

Founded in Florence in 1921, Gucci is one of the world’s leading luxury fashion brands. With a renowned reputation for quality and Italian craftsmanship, Gucci designs, manufactures and distributes highly desirable products such as leather goods (handbags, small leather goods, and luggage), shoes, ready-to-wear, silks, timepieces and fine jewellery. Eyewear and fragrances are manufactured and distributed under license by global industry leaders in these two sectors. Gucci products are sold exclusively through a network of directly operated boutiques (278 at September 2009) and a small number of selected department and specialty stores.
