De Beers has welcomed the launch of the Responsible Jewellery Council’s (RJC) certification system, which will apply to all member companies in the diamond and gold jewellery supply chain.
As an early advocate of the importance of this area, having launched its own Best Practice Principles (BPP) in 2005, and a founding member of the RJC, De Beers fully supports the Council’s aims to promote responsible and ethical, human rights, social and environmental practices in a transparent and accountable manner throughout the industry from mine to retail. De Beers is committed to continual improvement of industry standards, and is pleased that, with the implementation of this system, there will be one comprehensive set of industry-wide standards recognised by all major players. This is critical to reinforcing consumer confidence in diamond and gold jewellery, and creating a level playing field for all of us in the industry.
De Beers leads the diamond industry’s ethical practices with its BPP; a set of requirements designed to ensure that everyone in the supply chain working with De Beers is committed to the highest professional ethical standards in respect of business, social and environmental practice. Adherence to the BPP is a condition of supply for DTC Sightholders. De Beers will work closely with the RJC to bring its BPP standards in line with RJC requirements, so that compliance with BPP will afford Sightholders the opportunity of attaining RJC certification.
