Gareth Penny, Managing Director of the De Beers Group, has been appointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Debswana for a two year period. Mr Penny takes over from Mr Eric Molale, the Permanent secretary to the President.
Gareth, who was appointed Director of Sales and Marketing of the Diamond Trading Company (London) in 2001, has been instrumental in reshaping the world’s largest diamond company, and also the diamond industry.
Gareth joined the Board of De Beers in 2003, becoming Group Managing Director of the De Beers Group of Companies in March 2006. Early in 2009, Gareth was asked to join the Botswana Economic Advisory Council to the President, and in January 2010 he became Chairman of Debswana, the Joint Venture partnership with the Government of Botswana. He is a non-executive Director of the Julius Baer Holding Limited Board, the listed leading, and dedicated wealth manager in Switzerland.
Educated at Diocesan College (Bishops) in Cape Town and at Eton College, Gareth was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, graduating with a Masters in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Gareth is married to Kate and they have two children.
