A Zimbawean parliamentary committee has heard that Obert Mpofu, Zimbabwe’s Mining Development Minister, unlawfully appointed a board member to the Mbada Diamonds joint venture which was controversially awarded the rights to manage the Chiadzwa diamond field.
The controversy surrounds the appointment of Robert Mhlanga as Chairman of Mbada Holdings. Mhlanga was on the board of the sister company of the South African compnay that formed Mbada along with the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC).
Under Section 5 (2) of the ZMDC Act the Minister of Mines is allowed to appoint a chairperson and a deputy chairperson of the ZMDC.
The Zimbabwe parliamentary Committee was led by Edward Chindori Chininga.
