South Africa’s Abbey Chikane, who has recently arrived in Zimbabwe to monitor the Kimberley Process, has allegedly been described as advancing Europe’s interests during his current visit.
Thankful Musukutwa, the Permanent Secretary in Zimbabwe’s Mines and Minerals Ministry is alleged to have stated “This person appointed to this Kimberley Process is the Zimbabwe sanctions advisor to the EU. If we aren’t clever we are imposing more sanctions on ourselves. We went through hell to be admitted into the KP. Outside organisations such as Africa Union, World Diamonds Council and Americans, they bring in CIOs … all they’re bent on is to bring in more sanctions on us…. We are giving room to get into our system.”
Europe recently renewed its travel and financial sanctions against Robert Mugabe and other Zimbabwean officials.
