CIBJO President Discusses Cooperation in Corporate Social Responsibility With Chinese Regional Jewelry Sector

CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri has paid an official visit to Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, where he was a guest of the regional government. In a meeting with senior officials, he discussed cooperation in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility, and in particular the development of CSR education programmes for the Guangzhou’s jewellery sector.

Hosting Dr. Cavalieri was Guan Zhang Ping, the Standing Commissioner of the Guangzhou Committee. He also met with Chen Guo, deputy mayor of Guangzhou.

“Guangzhou is playing an increasingly critical role in the jewellery distribution chain, producing about 20 percent of the total value of jewellery sold nationwide in China, and anywhere between 30 percent and 60 percent of the jewellery that is earmarked for export. This, of course, is in part due to its proximity to Hong Kong, which for well over a decade has been shifting its production capability onto the mainland,” Dr. Cavalieri said.

“During my meetings in Guangzhou, I stressed the importance of proper CSR at all station of the jewellery distribution chain, and emphasised that, ultimately, we are all only as strong as the weakest link in the chain. What I was very happy to discover was a city that is not only keen to greatly expand its jewellery industry, but also one that is intent on doing this in the right way,” Dr. Cavalieri said.

During his meetings, Dr. Cavalieri outlined the CSR educational programme that is being developed by the World Jewellery Confederation Education Foundation (WJCEF), and he expressed his readiness to expand its operation into the Chinese industry. “The success of WJCEF will largely depend upon the level of cooperation that we receive in the various national industries, and from what I saw in Guangzhou, the foundation will be warmly received in China,” he said.
