James Suzman is director of Corporate Citizenship at De Beers. Prior to his work with De Beers, James, an expert on the bushman of Botswana, taught as Professor of Anthropology at Cambridge University where he was the Smuts Commonwealth Fellow African Studies. As former Director for the San Regional Human Rights Assessment for the European Commission, James oversaw the implementation of CP/EU resolution calling for an investigation into the status of indigenous peoples across southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia. Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe). James holds a PHD in Social Anthropology from Edinburgh University and an MA from the University of St. Andrews.
