Bonhams is pleased to announce the October 19, 2010 auction of Fine Jewelry in New York. The sale, simulcast to San Francisco and Los Angeles, will feature property from the Estate of Academy Award-winning actress and Chairwoman of the Norton Simon Museum, Jennifer Jones Simon as well as pieces from the daughter of Ferdinand W. Roebling, and the Collection of Ms. Blanche Thebom, one of the great operatic legends of the postwar era and leading dramatic mezzo-soprano of the Metropolitan Opera for more than 20 years.
Highlighting the Estate of Jennifer Jones Simon is a lovely South Sea cultured pearl and diamond necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels (est. $70,000-90,000). A gift to Jones from husband Norton Simon, the multi-strand necklace was Jones’ favorite piece of jewelry and she wore it at nearly every public appearance. Auctions featuring additional works from the Estate will be offered during the Fall of 2010 and January 2011 at Bonhams & Butterfields.
Works of note from the sale will also include a fine 3.82 carat rectangular-cut diamond solitaire ring D color, VS1 clarity (est. $65,000 – 85,000). Mounted in platinum, the center stone is flanked by fancy-shaped diamond shoulders and inscribed with maker’s mark HW for Harry Winston.
Additional highlights from the Fall sale include pieces by Marsh & Co. from the Estate of Margaret Roebling Perrine, daughter of Ferdinand W. Roebling, general manager of John A. Roebling Sons Company and perhaps best identified for building the magnificent Brooklyn Bridge. The Marsh name is widely know for rare and collectible Asian inspired pieces such as an art deco jadeite jade and diamond brooch, circa 1930 (est. $6,000 – 8,000) and an art deco coral and diamond bracelet, circa 1935 (est. $5,000 – 7,000), on offer in October.
A selection of antique diamond necklaces belonging to the estate of the opera singer, Ms. Blanche Theborn, will be offered. .An elaborate graduated openwork antique diamond necklace, circa 1880 est. $15,000 – 25,000) will also be featured during the sale. The Collection also includes a polychrome enameled gold three-dimensional Renaissance revival pearl and gem-set pendant, circa 1880 (est. $12,000-18,000) and an antique diamond and central baroque pearl necklace and earclips, circa 1880 (est. $15,000 – 20,000).and an elaborate diamond bib necklace circa 1880 (est $ 15,000-20,000).
During the day-long jewelry offerings on October 19th, The Collection of Laura Speiser, featuring jewelry by Andrew Grima, will be offered throughout the morning session. The Collection boasts a major collection of work by legendary British Royal jeweler Andrew Grima from the Estate of Laura Speiser. This will be the first auction to focus on Grima’s work since his passing in 2007.
The offering consists of 35 designs highlighted by a circa 1988 emerald and diamond ring. Centering a cut-cornered, square-cut 11.35-carat emerald ‘pool’ within a raised surround of round brilliant-cut diamonds, the ring is completed by a textured gold mount. Exemplary of Grima’s work, this striking ring is estimated at $20,000-30,000, among others. (Please see separate press release)
