Diamond Giant De Beers Canada Releases Updated Mining Terminology Booklet

De Beers Canada is pleased to announce release of an updated terminology booklet of mining terms in  Tłicho and  Dene Sûłiné
(Chipewyan).
The booklet was originally developed in 2008 to improve understanding as the Gahcho Kué Project moved forward. Earlier this year, a group of community interpreters and elders led by the Yamozha Kue Society, reviewed the booklet and added 112 new terms.  The workshop also included community elders who acted as resource people who helped define the terms.
“It is critical that community members, especially elders, fully understand complex mining terminology for meaningful, two-way dialogue,” said Elizabeth (Sabet) Biscaye, De Beers Canada Superintendent of Community Relations. “The best way to do that is to ensure interpreters can explain mining terminology using people’s first languages.”
She went on to add that it is also essential for interpreters to explain and accurately interpret, into English, aboriginal language concepts and perspectives so that those who do not speak Aboriginal languages can gain a better appreciation for the richness of the Aboriginal languages.
The booklet is being mailed to selected individuals in communities close to our projects and PDF versions are available for download from the De Beers Canada website, www.debeerscanada.com.
